New Indian HAPS Drone Announced After Recent Drone Incursion Into China

Indian navy UAV Heron, Credit: Wikimedia Commons Normally I try to avoid writing stories about military drone use, generally speaking there are negative undertones that are hard to avoid, however in this case I have to make an exception. Why? For two reasons, first, some of the drone technology in question is pretty [...]

Drone Collides with Passenger Aircraft, and Other Near Misses

Drones are exciting and fun to fly, and that's a big part of the reason that people forget the dangers consumer drones can pose. I'm not talking about personal injury in this case, but rather the very real danger that drones can pose to other aircraft. Previous articles I've written on subject have been more positive, and while I wish I could continue that trend, it seems that the facts no longer support it. After a documented collision and numerous near misses this is a safety issue that we must be aware of, and as a community address.

US Marines Set To Launch 3D Printed Drones Into Battle

I normally try to avoid military subject matter on the Drone Universities blog. Not that it isn't interesting, it just, generally speaking, doesn't match well topically with the rest of our stories. However, every once in a while I'll run into something so interesting that I feel like I have to share. This is one [...]

Lockheed Martin Demos First Underwater UAV Launch from AUV

Pushing the envelope of drone technology requires creativity and Lockheed Martin has demonstrated they have it in spades when they successfully launched the first underwater unmanned aircraft launch from an unmanned underwater vehicle. Conceptually it's simple, a Marlin MK2 autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) launches a Vector Hawk drone (UAV), however the real world implementation is just [...]

US Navy Testing Submarine Hunting Drone Ships

Speed Testing the New Anti Submarine Drone Ship While researching new drone stories to share with our readers, I stumbled upon this interesting article discussing a new unmanned ship "designed to hunt submarines." The Anti-Submarine Warfare Continuous Trail Unmanned Vessel or ACTUV is a drone ship developed by Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) in partnership with Vigor Industrial. [...]

Both Russia and US Working on Militarized, Swarming Drones

Drone technology is improving fast, both on the consumer as well as military side. Now more then ever, drones are having a big impact on modern warfare. The US and Russia are both working on new, tiny, swarming drones that can be launched from a rifle-like device and the race is heating up. In recent years, [...]

How Do You Defend Against Rogue Drones?

The potential for drone technology to be misused is real. We've already seen multiple examples of weaponized consumer drones, which begs the question, "how do we defend against rogue drones?" Thankfully this is a problem that more than one company is attempting to solve. UK-based OpenWorks Engineering believes they have the solution with their SkyWall [...]

The PD-100 Is A Microdrone With A Military Future

PD-100 Black Hornet 2 I wrote about the PD-100 Black Hornet 2 back in early June, and at that time, the US Military was still in the testing phases. What is the PD-100 Black Hornet 2? It's a microdrone with a military future. The PD-100 Black Hornet 2 is a high-tech camera drone [...]
