We recently featured a video created by Marc Coppel using his DJI Phantom titled “Area 51 airspace breach and Little A’Le’Inn’s Haunted Trailer.”
In my original post, I stated:
In this 12:55 long video, Marc Coppell not only takes his DJI Phantom and flies into restricted airspace, he decides to fly into the restricted airspace above Area 51.
However, after recieving an email from Marc:
I am writing in response in an article on your website. A correction to it would be that my drone did not fly over the base itself (its “DJI” controller range and flight time is very limited) and was outside the ground perimeter (where one could drive up to). The government has denied its existence for a long time. Though technically a rogue plane would probably be shot down. It in no way endangered anyone, any craft nor gave away any secrets. I wanted to show it could be done.
Thank you for the extra traffic though,
I wanted to post an update to clarify things. Marc did not fly over Area 51 itself, instead he was flying outside the ground perimeter. Thanks Marc for being a reader and for the follow-up. (Happy to hear we sent some traffic your way, too.)
Interesting Area 51 fact, did you know Obama is the first president to ever publicly mention Area 51?
Obama used the annual Kennedy Center Honors ceremony to crack a joke at the expense of actor Shirley MacLaine, one of the five award recipients, who has claimed to have seen UFOs on several occasions.
“Now, when you first become president, one of the questions that people ask you is, ‘What’s really going on in Area 51?’ ” Obama said. “When I wanted to know, I’d call Shirley MacLaine. I think I just became the first president to ever publicly mention Area 51. How’s that, Shirley?”
About Area 51
Dreamland is the code name for Area 51. Area 51 is a “secret” military base located about 90 miles north of Las Vegas, Nevada. It is also known as Groom Lake, named for the dry lake bed the military base is sitting on. The size of the base is six miles wide by ten miles long. Recently the Federal government has seized an additional 85,000 acres surrounding the base to keep observers at a distance.
Contained somewhere on the grounds is a large air base that the U.S. government will not discuss. It is considered so sensitive that only those who take an oath of secrecy for life are allowed in. Civilian contractors and others who work at the base are flown in every morning aboard unmarked planes with blacked-out windows. It is said that structures are built deep into the desert floor, with buildings going down thirty to forty stories below the surface.
