While not ready for public consumption and uber limited in its geographical service area, the Alibaba drone delivery service is still pretty cool. The agenda of large companies like Amazon and Alibaba can help by indirectly pushing regulations in a positive direction for the rest of the drone industry. The complexity of this experiment is great, airspace in China is strictly controlled and largely managed by the military. Limited drone use is acceptable for some activities, but operated must apply for permission beforehand.

Alibaba Deploys Drones to Deliver Tea in China

Echoing US online retailer Amazon, Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba on Wednesday (Feb 4) tested its first drone delivery service, promising to whisk ginger tea to customers within an hour despite tight controls on airspace.

NDTV (New Delhi Television) highlighted the event too:

Echoing US online retailer Amazon, Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba on Wednesday tested its first drone delivery service, promising to whisk ginger tea to customers within an hour despite tight controls on airspace.

Alibaba’s flagship consumer-to-consumer marketplace Taobao, estimated to hold more than 90 percent of the Chinese market for such transactions, showed off a photo of a black and silver drone with helicopter-like propellers carrying a white box to launch the service.
