Nevada is a rewarding and demanding place to fly. Open desert, high-elevation terrain, intense summer heat and some of the most complex military airspace in the country all shape how a drone pilot plans a mission here. Drone Universities has taught drone operations since 2014, and we bring that experience directly to you: our FAA Certified Flight Instructors travel to your office, job site, station or training ground anywhere in Nevada, seven days a week.
Whether you are preparing for the FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Knowledge Test, standing up a public safety drone unit or adding aerial data capture to a construction or mining operation, we build the session around the conditions you will actually face.

Why Train with Drone Universities in Nevada
Instruction on your own ground
Practicing at the location where you will operate means learning its real obstacles, launch points and airspace, not a generic field.
Training built for desert conditions
We cover density altitude, battery performance in extreme heat and cold, dust management, wind over open terrain and glare off reflective surfaces such as solar arrays.
One-on-one or group formats
Individual sessions suit a new pilot or a freelancer; group sessions let a crew, department or project team train together on the same procedures.
Seven-day scheduling
Shift-based teams and project crews can schedule around their operations, including weekends.
Simple enrollment
There is no online checkout. You request training, we confirm the details with you, and you receive an enrollment link by email.
Nevada Airspace and Drone Laws
A large share of Nevada’s sky is controlled or restricted, so airspace knowledge is a core part of every Nevada session.
- Las Vegas Class B airspace. Harry Reid International Airport sits beneath the Las Vegas Class B airspace area, which covers much of the valley. Part 107 flights in controlled airspace need FAA authorization, typically requested through LAANC where the UAS Facility Map grid allows. We teach students to read the sectional chart and facility maps before planning a flight.
- Reno. Reno-Tahoe International is surrounded by Class C airspace, so northern Nevada pilots work through the same authorization process.
- Military airspace. The Air Force states that civilian drone use within federally restricted military airspace around Nellis Air Force Base, Creech Air Force Base and the Nevada Test and Training Range is strictly prohibited. That range includes the restricted area around the site commonly known as Area 51. We show students how to identify restricted areas and check for temporary flight restrictions before every flight.
- Hoover Dam. Hoover Dam is one of the national landmarks where the FAA prohibits drone flights from the ground up to 400 feet above ground level, and the Bureau of Reclamation prohibits drone flying on dam property.
- Lake Mead and national parks. Launching, landing or operating a drone on land and water managed by the National Park Service within Lake Mead National Recreation Area is prohibited unless the Superintendent approves it in writing. The only exception is a designated radio-control model aircraft field near Boulder Beach. Most other National Park Service sites have similar restrictions.
- Nevada state law (NRS Chapter 493). Nevada’s statutes add their own rules on top of FAA rules:
- Critical facilities. You may not fly within 500 feet horizontally or 250 feet vertically of a critical facility without the owner’s written consent. Critical facilities include refineries, water and wastewater treatment plants, mines, power plants and substations, utility transmission lines, jails and prisons.
- Airports. You may not fly within 5 miles of an airport unless the airport consents or you hold FAA authorization, and you must carry documentation of that authorization while flying.
- Weaponized drones are prohibited.
- Low flights over property. Property owners can bring a trespass action over repeated flights below 250 feet after they have given notice. There are exceptions, including FAA-certified operators flying within the scope of a business registered in Nevada.
- Police and public agencies. Law enforcement drone use needs a warrant in many circumstances. Other public agencies must register their drones with the Department of Public Safety and follow its regulations.
This page is general guidance, not legal advice. Always confirm current FAA and Nevada requirements before flying.

Who We Train in Nevada
- Fire departments. Wildland and urban crews use drones for situational awareness, hotspot detection with thermal sensors and post-incident documentation. We train crews on safe operations near active incidents and coordination with manned aircraft.
- Police and sheriff’s offices. Programs cover search and rescue in open desert, accident and scene documentation, crowd event support and the procedures public agencies must follow when operating drones.
- Government agencies. State, county and municipal teams use drones for infrastructure inspection, land management and emergency planning.
- Businesses. Mining operations use drones for stockpile measurement and site surveys. Construction firms rely on progress capture and mapping. Solar developers and operators fly panel inspections. Event, film and marketing teams need safe, legal aerial footage in a busy airspace environment.
- Individuals. New pilots, career changers and freelance photographers preparing for Part 107 certification.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a Part 107 certificate to fly a drone for work in Nevada?
Yes. Any commercial or business-related drone flight in the United States requires an FAA Remote Pilot Certificate under Part 107. Our test prep course prepares you for the Knowledge Test.
Where can I take the Part 107 Knowledge Test in Nevada?
The test is given at FAA-approved Knowledge Testing Centers operated through PSI. Nevada currently has testing locations in the Las Vegas area (including Henderson and North Las Vegas), Reno and Elko. Confirm availability and book through PSI’s FAA testing portal.
Can I fly a drone on the Las Vegas Strip?
The Strip lies within Las Vegas Class B airspace, so you need FAA authorization. Nevada law also restricts flights within 5 miles of an airport without consent or FAA authorization. On top of that, you must follow Part 107 rules on flying over people and respect temporary flight restrictions and property rules. We cover this planning process in training.
Can I fly near Hoover Dam or Lake Mead?
No. Drone flights over Hoover Dam are prohibited from the ground up to 400 feet. Within Lake Mead National Recreation Area, launching or operating from park land or water is prohibited without the Superintendent’s written approval, except at the designated model aircraft field.
Can you train our entire department at once?
Yes. We offer group training for fire departments, police agencies, government teams and companies, delivered at your facility.
How do I enroll?
Request training online, by phone or by email. After we confirm the details, we send an enrollment link by email.
