Drone Training for Nebraska Cropland, Rail and Cities

From the Missouri River bluffs to the Panhandle, Nebraska drone work covers a lot of ground. Omaha and Lincoln crews plan around three Class C airports, including Offutt Air Force Base in Bellevue, while farm, rail, utility and ethanol crews travel long distances across irrigated cropland, Sandhills rangeland and the Platte River valley. Wind, spring storms and cold winters affect every flight.

We start with the subjects tested on the FAA Part 107 Knowledge Test: airspace classes, weather, aircraft loading and performance, radio procedures and crew resource management. The instructor then applies them in supervised flights and mission planning at your Nebraska site.

Nebraska groups we teach include individual pilots, insurers, agricultural companies and cooperatives, rail and logistics firms, contractors, public power districts, universities and agencies. Some want a first certificate and others applied mapping, inspection or imaging skills. Every course covers the Nebraska drone trespass law and other state rules.

Why Nebraska Organizations Pick Drone Universities

Focused on drones since 2014

Founded in 2014, Drone Universities has built its courses around live instruction, FAA rules and hands-on flight time.

Training comes to you

Instructors travel to offices, plants, campuses and farms anywhere in Nebraska, from Omaha to the Panhandle, so your team avoids travel days.

FAA Certified Flight Instructors

FAA Certified Flight Instructors lead each class and teach sectionals, weather and aeronautical decision-making with the rigor of crewed flight training.

Practice that fits your work

Flight exercises can follow your operation, from crop scouting and spray drone planning to rail and power line inspection and hail claims.

Nebraska Farms, Railroads and Utilities Using Drones

  • Agriculture. Corn, soybean, cattle and seed operations use aerial imagery to scout fields, check center pivots and review stands and drainage.
  • Spray drones. The Nebraska Department of Agriculture treats drone pesticide applications as aerial. Applying restricted use pesticides requires a license with the Aerial Pest Control category (12), which calls for a valid FAA license, and aerial businesses need a Nebraska Aerial Pesticide Business License.
  • Rail, logistics and utilities. Railroads, public power districts and cooperatives inspect track, bridges, transmission lines and substations across long rural corridors.
  • Insurance. Insurers and roofing contractors capture hail and wind damage on homes, machine sheds and grain bins without putting anyone on a ladder.
  • Construction and engineering. Road builders and engineering firms track progress, measure aggregate stockpiles and create orthomosaic maps for highway, bridge and site projects.
  • Public safety. Police, fire and emergency management agencies in Nebraska fly drones for scene overview, search support and flood and tornado response, and our police drone training programs cover those missions in detail.

Pick the fields that matter to your crew and we will build scenarios around them. Larger Nebraska teams often use our corporate drone training to pair certification prep with applied exercises.

Nebraska Drone Laws, Permits and Airspace

  • Class C airspace. Eppley Airfield in Omaha, Offutt Air Force Base in Bellevue and Lincoln Airport each have Class C airspace. Part 107 flights there require FAA authorization, typically obtained through LAANC or FAA DroneZone.
  • Class D and Class E surface areas. Central Nebraska Regional Airport in Grand Island has part-time Class D airspace, and airports such as Kearney, North Platte and Scottsbluff have Class E surface areas. Under 14 CFR 107.41, Part 107 flights inside a Class E surface area also need FAA authorization. Grand Island’s Class D hours are set in advance by NOTAM.
  • Drone trespass. Under Neb. Rev. Stat. 28-521, second degree criminal trespass includes knowingly and without privilege causing a drone to enter onto or above another person’s property with the intent to observe someone without consent in a place of solitude or seclusion.
  • Wildlife. Neb. Rev. Stat. 37-509 makes it unlawful to use any aircraft to harass any bird, fish or other animal, and the Nebraska Department of Transportation notes that this includes drones.
  • Government drone procurement. Under the Secure Drone Purchasing Act (Neb. Rev. Stat. 73-1001 to 73-1005), Nebraska state agencies may only acquire drones on the NDOT list of secure drones starting January 1, 2027.
  • State parks and wildlife areas. Nebraska Game and Parks does not permit drones in state parks, state historical parks, state recreation areas or wildlife management areas unless a special occasion permit has been approved.
  • National Park Service sites. Nebraska’s NPS units include Scotts Bluff and Agate Fossil Beds national monuments, Homestead National Historical Park, the Niobrara National Scenic River and the Missouri National Recreational River on the South Dakota line. Under National Park Service policy, drones may not be launched, landed or operated in them except in limited, approved cases.

General guidance only, not legal advice. Before flying in Nebraska, confirm FAA, state and local rules, check NOTAMs and flight restrictions and get the landowner’s permission.

Frequently Asked Questions

Commercial flights in Nebraska follow the FAA’s Part 107 rule. The pilot in command must hold a Remote Pilot Certificate, which requires passing the FAA knowledge test, and every drone flown for work must be registered. The FAA explains the process in its guide to becoming a certificated remote pilot, and our Nebraska course prepares you for the test.

Yes. Nebraska treats using a drone to spy on someone in a place of seclusion as criminal trespass, bars using aircraft, including drones, to harass wildlife and limits which drones state agencies may acquire. Airspace questions remain with the FAA.

Within controlled airspace you need FAA authorization first. Eppley Airfield, Offutt Air Force Base and Lincoln Airport have Class C airspace, Grand Island has part-time Class D airspace, and Kearney, North Platte and Scottsbluff have Class E surface areas. Approved altitudes near them may be very low; the course covers facility maps and requests.

Only with a permit. Nebraska Game and Parks allows drones in its parks, recreation areas and wildlife management areas only under an approved special occasion permit. Scotts Bluff National Monument follows NPS policy, which prohibits drone launches, landings and flights except in limited, approved cases.

At your site. We teach at offices, plants, rail yards, farms, campuses and public safety facilities across Nebraska, and we will help find a flight area if yours will not work.

Send a training request or call 1.818.255.0406, and we will agree on the course, instructor, location and dates for your Nebraska team.
