Hands-On Drone Courses for Idaho Valleys, Farms and Forests
Idaho drone crews fly everything from irrigated Snake River Plain farmland to timbered panhandle slopes. Treasure Valley teams in Boise and Meridian plan around Class C airspace, while crews in Idaho Falls, Pocatello, Twin Falls and Lewiston work near Class D airports. Farm, forestry, utility and mining crews cover long distances, and canyon winds, elevation and wildfire smoke shape planning.
Your instructor works through the FAA Part 107 Knowledge Test subjects, from airspace and weather to loading and performance, radio procedures and crew resource management, then turns that theory into supervised flying and job planning at your Idaho site.
Idaho clients include individual pilots, food processors, technology employers, farms, forestry and mining companies, contractors, utilities, universities and public agencies. Some come for initial certification and others for applied mapping, inspection or imaging. We also cover the Idaho written consent rule and other state drone laws.
Reasons Idaho Teams Train with Drone Universities
Instructor-led since 2014
Drone Universities began in 2014 and still centers every course on a live instructor, FAA regulations and real flight practice.
On site across Idaho
We come to your office, plant, campus or farm, from the Treasure Valley to the panhandle, so your crew trains where it works.
FAA Certified Flight Instructors
Courses are taught by FAA Certified Flight Instructors, who cover charts, weather and aeronautical judgment as crewed-aircraft pilots learn them.
Matched to your operation
Flights can mirror your daily work, from potato and dairy operations and forest surveys to dam and power line inspection and wildfire assessment.
Scheduling without hassle
Book online or call 1.818.255.0406, and we will help you choose a course, dates and a safe practice area.

Drone Jobs in Idaho Farming, Forestry and Power
- Agriculture. Potato, sugar beet, grain, hay and dairy operations use aerial imagery to scout fields and check pivots and canals. Since July 1, 2026, IDAPA 02.03.03.401 bars applying any pesticide by drone without a license carrying the Aerial UAS Pest Control (AU) category; the pilot is the applicator and must be on site.
- Forestry and wildfire. Timber companies and land managers survey stands, map burn scars and plan reforestation across rugged terrain.
- Energy and utilities. Hydropower operators, electric utilities and cooperatives inspect dams, transmission lines, substations and solar sites.
- Construction and engineering. Treasure Valley builders and engineers log site progress, measure fill and stockpiles and build orthomosaic maps for new development.
- Mining. Mine operators and contractors map pits and haul roads and measure stockpiles without putting surveyors near equipment.
- Public safety. Sheriff’s offices, fire agencies and emergency managers rely on drones for scene overview, backcountry searches and wildfire and flood assessment. These missions are covered in depth in our police drone training programs.
Course scenarios can lean toward whichever of these fields your crew works in. Larger Idaho groups can combine certification prep and applied practice through our corporate drone training.
Idaho Drone Law and Airspace Guide
- Class C airspace. Boise Airport has Class C airspace that covers much of Boise. To fly there under Part 107 you need FAA authorization, which is usually requested through LAANC or FAA DroneZone.
- Class D airports. Class D airspace surrounds Idaho Falls Regional, Pocatello Regional, Magic Valley Regional in Twin Falls, Lewiston-Nez Perce County and Friedman Memorial airports and Mountain Home Air Force Base. Some of these towers are part-time, so confirm Class D hours in the Chart Supplement.
- Privacy and consent. Under Idaho Code 21-213, no person may use a drone to intentionally conduct surveillance of, or photograph or record, specifically targeted persons or private property, such as a dwelling, farm, dairy, ranch or commercial property, without written consent, or record an individual for publication without written consent.
- Correctional facilities. Idaho Code 20-251, added in 2026, makes it a misdemeanor to fly a drone in the restricted airspace of an Idaho Department of Correction facility, from the surface to 400 feet above ground level within the facility perimeter.
- Hunting and wildlife. Idaho Code 36-1101 bars using a drone to hunt game, to molest or drive game animals or birds, or to spot game from the air and relay its location to someone on the ground.
- State parks. Under the Idaho state park rules (IDAPA 26.01.20.175.11), drone operation may be authorized by the park or program manager if it does not interfere with traditional park uses and is consistent with protecting park resources.
- National Park Service sites. Idaho’s National Park Service units include Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve, Hagerman Fossil Beds National Monument, City of Rocks National Reserve, Minidoka National Historic Site, Nez Perce National Historical Park sites and the Idaho edge of Yellowstone. National Park Service policy prohibits drone launches, landings and flights in these units except in limited, approved cases.
General guidance, not legal advice. Before each Idaho flight, verify FAA, state and local rules and temporary flight restrictions, and get written consent where Idaho law requires it.
Idaho Course Planning, Step by Step
- Describe your team. Send the request form or call with your Idaho site, group size, skill level and target dates.
- Review our proposal. We outline a course, assign an instructor and check airspace, terrain and open space at your site so ground school and flying fit together.
- Train on familiar ground. Your instructor teaches on location and supervises flights in the canyon wind, elevation and weather your crew handles on the job.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do Idaho drone pilots need FAA certification for work flights?
Yes. Work flights in Idaho fall under the FAA’s Part 107 rule, so the pilot in command needs a Remote Pilot Certificate from passing the FAA knowledge test, and the drone must be FAA registered. See the FAA page on becoming a certificated remote pilot. Our Idaho course is built to prepare you for that test.
What Idaho laws affect drone flights?
Idaho requires written consent before a drone is used to target people or private property for surveillance or photography, prohibits flights over state correctional facilities and bars using drones to hunt or locate game. Airspace remains the FAA’s domain.
Can I fly near Boise or Idaho Falls?
Not inside controlled airspace without FAA authorization. Boise Airport has Class C airspace, and Idaho Falls, Pocatello, Twin Falls, Lewiston and Hailey have Class D airspace. Approved ceilings near those runways can be very low; we teach facility maps and requests.
Can I fly in Idaho state parks or at Craters of the Moon?
Only with approval. Idaho state park rules let the park or program manager authorize drone operation, so ask the park office first. Craters of the Moon is an NPS unit, and NPS policy bars drone launches, landings and flights there except in limited, approved cases.
Will the instructor come to our Idaho location?
Yes. Instructors teach at offices, plants, job sites, farms, campuses and public safety facilities throughout Idaho. No open field at your site? We will talk through other options.
How can we book an Idaho course?
Use our training request form or call 1.818.255.0406. We then confirm the course, instructor, site and schedule for your Idaho group.
