Utah Drone Training for Builders, Mines, Aerospace and Ranches

Utah runs from the Wasatch Front to the red rock country of the south, and drone work changes along the way. Crews in Salt Lake City plan around the Class B airspace at Salt Lake City International, Ogden and Utah County teams work near the Class D airspace at Hill Air Force Base, Ogden-Hinckley and Provo, and mining, energy, ranch and survey crews cover long distances across valleys, basins and canyons. High elevation that cuts aircraft performance, canyon winds, summer heat and the wildfire season all shape flight planning.

We hold Utah courses at the site your crew flies: a subdivision going up in Utah County or St. George, a copper or aggregate pit, an aerospace plant in Davis or Weber County, or an alfalfa and cattle operation in the Cache or Sanpete valleys. Instruction tracks the Part 107 exam and spends extra time on the Salt Lake City Class B airspace, high altitude density effects on battery and climb performance, canyon winds, wildfire TFRs and pilot-observer teamwork. Supervised flights at your location wrap up each day.

Our Utah students include builders and engineers, mining and energy companies, aerospace and manufacturing suppliers, farmers and ranchers, utilities and police, fire and search and rescue teams. Some are new pilots preparing for the Remote Pilot Certificate; others hold one and want mapping, inspection or thermal training. We also explain Utah’s safe-operation statute, the wildfire rule and state park permission requirements.

Reasons Utah Organizations Choose Drone Universities

In-person training since 2014

Drone Universities has delivered hands-on remote pilot courses since 2014, and Utah teams get the same field-tested approach.

Drone Uses Across Utah Construction, Mining and Aerospace

  • Construction and real estate. Builders, developers and engineers along the Wasatch Front and in St. George track progress, measure earthwork and produce orthomosaic maps for new neighborhoods, roads and campuses.
  • Mining and energy. Copper, aggregate and potash operations and oil and gas producers in the Uinta Basin measure stockpiles, map pits and inspect well sites without sending crews onto unstable ground.
  • Aerospace and manufacturing. Plants and suppliers in Davis, Weber and Salt Lake counties use drones to inspect roofs and stacks and to document large facilities without lifts or scaffolding.
  • Agriculture and ranching. Alfalfa, orchard, dairy and cattle operations use aerial imagery to scout fields, check irrigation and review rangeland. Drone pesticide work in Utah requires UDAF certification in the Aerial category plus the category for the work performed, and the applicator must hold an FAA pilot or remote pilot certificate under Utah rule R68-7.
  • Utilities. Electric, gas and water utilities inspect lines, substations, canals and towers across long corridors in rugged terrain.
  • Public safety. Utah police, sheriffs, fire agencies and search and rescue teams use drones for scene overview, canyon and backcountry searches and flood assessment. Agencies can explore our police drone training programs.

Flight practice can focus on the Utah industry your team works in. When several employees need certification, corporate drone training combines exam study with hands-on work at your facility.

Utah Drone Laws, Airspace, Wildfire and Park Rules

  • Class B airspace. Salt Lake City International sits under Class B airspace that covers much of the Salt Lake Valley. Within that Class B airspace and other controlled airspace in Utah, pilots need FAA authorization before flying, typically requested through LAANC or FAA DroneZone.
  • Class D airports. Class D airspace surrounds Hill Air Force Base, Ogden-Hinckley Airport and Provo Airport. Utah Class D towers do not all operate around the clock, and the Chart Supplement shows the active hours for each one.
  • State safe-operation law. Utah Code 72-10-1002 requires visual line of sight, air traffic control authorization in Class B, C or D airspace and a 400-foot ceiling except near structures. It also bars flying over a surface critical infrastructure facility without its prior authorization and, with limited exceptions, flying from transit rail platforms.
  • Wildfires. Under Utah Code 65A-3-2.5, you may not fly in a wildfire temporary flight restriction or a designated wildland fire scene without the incident commander’s permission, and the incident commander or chief law enforcement officer may disable a drone flying there.
  • State parks. Utah Admin. Code R651-602-8 requires written permission from the park manager before you fly anywhere in the Utah state park system, and individual parks set their own drone rules. Wasatch Mountain State Park, for example, requires an approved drone permission form for personal flights.
  • National Park Service units. Arches, Bryce Canyon, Canyonlands, Capitol Reef and Zion national parks, Glen Canyon National Recreation Area and monuments such as Cedar Breaks, Natural Bridges and Timpanogos Cave are administered by the NPS. NPS policy prohibits launching or landing drones in these units without a specific park approval.

This overview of Utah and federal drone rules supports training and is not legal advice. Before each Utah flight, review NOTAMs and TFRs, including wildfire restrictions, FAA guidance and state law, and secure permission from the landowner or land manager.

Steps to Schedule Drone Training in Utah

  1. Make a request. Give us your Utah location, the number of pilots, their experience and your preferred dates.
  2. Lock in the details. We confirm the curriculum and instructor and review nearby airspace, such as the Salt Lake City Class B or Provo Class D, before training.
  3. Train on your ground. Ground school and supervised flights take place at your Utah site, at the elevation and in the terrain your pilots work.

Bring Drone Training to Your Utah Site

Whether your team works at a Salt Lake City plant, a Utah County job site or a ranch in southern Utah, our instructors come to you.

Training along the Wasatch Front, in southern Utah and in the Uinta Basin. Call 1.818.255.0406, email info@droneuniversities.com or send us a message.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Commercial flights in Utah fall under 14 CFR Part 107, so the remote pilot in command needs an FAA Remote Pilot Certificate, earned by passing the aeronautical knowledge test, and drones over 0.55 pounds must be registered. The FAA walks through it in its remote pilot certification guide, and our Utah courses prepare you for the test.

Utah law sets safe-operation rules, including air traffic control authorization in controlled airspace and limits over critical infrastructure, and prohibits flights near wildfires without the incident commander’s permission. State parks require written permission from the park manager, and FAA airspace rules apply alongside state law.

Yes, with FAA authorization. Salt Lake City International sits inside Class B airspace, and Hill Air Force Base, Ogden-Hinckley and Provo airports have Class D areas. Grid altitudes on the FAA facility maps shrink near the runways, so we teach students to read them and request authorization.

Utah state parks need written permission from the park manager before a drone flies. In Zion, Arches and the other national parks, NPS policy prohibits launching, landing or operating drones except in limited, approved cases.

At your property or another place you choose. We have trained Utah teams at job sites, mines, plants, ranches and public safety facilities. If space is limited or the site is close to a towered airport, we will help you find a nearby practice area.

Complete the course location request or call 1.818.255.0406 with your Utah location, group size and preferred dates, and we will reply with an instructor, an agenda and a confirmed schedule.
