Drone Training for Louisiana Plants, Ports, Fields and Coastline

Louisiana combines a busy industrial corridor, deep-water ports and vast coastal wetlands. Crews in New Orleans plan around Class B airspace, teams in Baton Rouge, Lafayette and Shreveport work near Class C airports, and farm and utility crews cover sugarcane fields, rice country and marsh. Heat, humidity, afternoon thunderstorms and the hurricane season all shape flight planning.

We bring Louisiana courses to the places your crews fly: a refinery or chemical plant along the river corridor, a shipyard or terminal on the Mississippi, a sugarcane field near New Iberia or a marsh restoration site on the coast. Ground school follows the Part 107 exam and spends extra time on the New Orleans Class B airspace, the Class C areas at Baton Rouge, Lafayette and Shreveport, Gulf humidity and pop-up storms, loading and crew coordination. Supervised flying at your site comes next.

Energy and petrochemical operators, port and maritime companies, sugarcane, rice and soybean growers, coastal engineers and scientists, contractors and parish public safety agencies all train with us. Some people need their first Remote Pilot Certificate, while experienced pilots want tank and flare stack inspection, mapping or thermal skills. We also cover Louisiana’s consent rules for recording refineries, chemical plants and other listed facilities.

What Louisiana Crews Get from Drone Universities

Drone education since 2014

Instructor-led drone training has been our focus since 2014, and Louisiana teams get a program shaped by years of on-site teaching.

We come to your Louisiana facility

Instructors travel from Lake Charles to Monroe and Houma, so your class takes place among your own tanks, docks or fields.

FAA Certified Flight Instructors teach every class

Courses are led by FAA Certified Flight Instructors who can explain the New Orleans Class B and the many Louisiana Class D fields in practical terms.

Scenarios from Louisiana work

Practice is drawn from your jobs: plant inspections, levee and shoreline surveys, crop checks or post-hurricane damage assessment.

Scheduling made simple

Request training online or call 1.818.255.0406, and we will set the course, dates and a suitable practice area for your Louisiana crew.

Drones at Work in Louisiana Industries

  • Energy and chemical. Operators and their contractors use drones to inspect tanks, flare stacks and roofs, reducing time spent on scaffolding.
  • Ports and maritime. Port, terminal and shipyard teams use drones to document facilities and monitor projects along the Mississippi River and the Gulf Coast.
  • Agriculture. Sugarcane, rice, soybean and cotton operations use aerial imagery to scout fields and review drainage. Companies that spray by drone need Louisiana pesticide licensing as well as FAA approvals, which we explain.
  • Coastal and environmental. Engineers and scientists use drones to survey shorelines and marsh restoration projects.
  • Construction and engineering. Louisiana contractors and engineers capture progress imagery on highway, plant and commercial projects, calculate stockpile volumes and deliver orthomosaic maps of sites that are often wet or hard to walk.
  • Public safety. Louisiana police, sheriffs, fire districts and parish emergency managers fly drones for scene documentation, searches in swamp and bayou country and hurricane and flood assessment. Our police drone programs go deeper into these missions.

We can tilt the flight exercises toward the industry your Louisiana crew supports. Employers training several pilots together often book corporate drone training, which joins exam study with hands-on work at your facility.

Louisiana Airspace, Facility Laws and Land Rules for Drone Pilots

  • Class B and Class C airspace. Louis Armstrong New Orleans International sits under Class B airspace, and Baton Rouge Metropolitan, Lafayette Regional, Shreveport Regional and Barksdale Air Force Base have Class C airspace. In the New Orleans Class B and these Class C areas, Louisiana pilots must have FAA authorization before flying, which is usually requested through LAANC or FAA DroneZone.
  • Class D airports. Class D airspace surrounds New Orleans Lakefront, NAS JRB New Orleans, Lake Charles Regional, Chennault International, Acadiana Regional, Houma-Terrebonne, Hammond Northshore Regional, Alexandria International, Monroe Regional and Shreveport Downtown. Not all Louisiana towers operate full time, so check the Chart Supplement for the hours each Class D area applies.
  • Targeted facilities and public sites. Under La. R.S. 14:337, surveillance or recording of facilities such as refineries, chemical plants, schools, grain elevators and other critical infrastructure requires the owner’s written consent. The law also bars flights over the State Capitol grounds, the Governor’s Mansion grounds and correctional facilities without written consent, and the recording of military installations without the commander’s consent.
  • Pesticide application. According to the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry, companies that apply pesticides by drone need an aerial owner operator license, and their applicators must be certified commercial applicators in the aerial category.
  • Wildlife lands and state parks. The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries prohibits drones on its refuges, wildlife management areas and conservation areas. At Louisiana State Parks, commercial drone use must be approved in advance by the Office of State Parks.
  • National Park Service units. Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve, New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park, Cane River Creole National Historical Park and Poverty Point National Monument are NPS sites in Louisiana. NPS policy does not allow drones to launch or land in them without a specific park approval.

This is our training summary of Louisiana and federal drone rules, not legal advice. Before each Louisiana flight, check NOTAMs and TFRs, FAA guidance and state law, and get consent from the facility or landowner where required.

Arranging Drone Training in Louisiana

  1. Tell us the basics. Share your Louisiana location, the number of pilots, their experience and the dates you prefer.
  2. Approve the plan. We confirm the curriculum and instructor and check nearby airspace, such as the New Orleans Class B or Baton Rouge Class C, in advance.
  3. Train on location. Classroom work and supervised flights take place at your Louisiana site in the heat, humidity and wind your crew deals with.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Commercial flights in Louisiana are covered by 14 CFR Part 107, which requires the remote pilot in command to hold an FAA Remote Pilot Certificate earned by passing the aeronautical knowledge test, and drones over 0.55 pounds must be registered. The FAA describes the process in Becoming a Certificated Remote Pilot. Our Louisiana courses get you ready for the exam.

Louisiana requires written consent before recording refineries, chemical plants, schools and other listed facilities, and prohibits flights over the State Capitol grounds, the Governor’s Mansion and correctional facilities without consent. Drone spraying needs an LDAF Aerial Owner Operator license and an applicator certified in the UAV category (11A). The FAA continues to regulate the airspace.

Yes, with FAA authorization. Louis Armstrong New Orleans International sits under Class B airspace, Baton Rouge Metropolitan is surrounded by Class C airspace and New Orleans Lakefront has a Class D area. Altitudes on the FAA facility maps get lower near runways, so our students learn to read them and request authorization.

Commercial drone flights at Louisiana State Parks require advance approval from the Office of State Parks. Drones are not allowed on Department of Wildlife and Fisheries refuges and wildlife management areas.

At your facility or another location you choose. We have taught at plant sites, port facilities, farms and parish training centers across Louisiana. If your site is too tight or inside busy airspace, we will help you choose a practice area close by.

Complete our training request form or phone 1.818.255.0406 with your Louisiana location, number of pilots and preferred dates. A coordinator confirms the course, instructor and schedule with you.
