Practical Drone Instruction Throughout Massachusetts

Massachusetts fits dense airspace, historic cities and a long coastline into a compact state. Much of Greater Boston lies beneath the Boston Class B airspace around Logan International Airport, and towered airports from Bedford and Norwood to Worcester, Westfield and the Islands add Class D airspace of their own. Sea breezes, coastal fog, nor’easters and early winter sunsets all shape how a flight should be planned.

Drone Universities delivers drone training in Massachusetts at your own site, so pilots learn in the environment they will fly in. Instructors teach the material covered on the FAA Part 107 Knowledge Test, including airspace, weather, regulations, radio communication and decision-making, and connect it to supervised flying, checklists and authorization planning for your location.

We work with solo operators, engineering and construction firms, utilities, universities, municipalities and corporate teams, one-on-one or in groups. Training can focus on earning a Remote Pilot Certificate or on applied skills such as inspection, mapping and aerial imaging, including the permits that many state properties require.

What Massachusetts Teams Gain from Drone Universities

Massachusetts Industries Flying Drones

  • Higher education and research. Universities, hospitals and research organizations use drones for campus facility inspection, documentation and field research, often within controlled airspace.
  • Construction and engineering. Contractors and engineering firms record progress, measure earthwork and capture close-up imagery of bridges, roofs, facades and transportation projects.
  • Utilities and energy. Electric and gas utilities, solar developers and telecom companies inspect lines, substations, rooftop and ground-mounted arrays and towers with less time spent at height.
  • Coastal and marine work. Ports, harbormasters, engineers and environmental consultants document piers, seawalls, beaches, dunes and storm damage along the coast and around the Cape and Islands.
  • Agriculture. Cranberry growers in southeastern Massachusetts, along with orchard, dairy and vegetable farms, use aerial imagery to review bogs and fields and to plan water management. Applying pesticides by drone requires MDAR certification in Category 34 (Aerial) under 333 CMR 13.04, plus an FAA Part 137 certificate.
  • Public safety. Massachusetts police, fire departments, harbormasters and emergency managers use drones for scene documentation, shoreline searches and assessment after nor’easters. Agencies can see our police drone training programs for details.

Flight practice can center on the Massachusetts work your team does. Organizations certifying several pilots can explore corporate drone training for group courses at their site.

Massachusetts Drone Rules, Boston Airspace and DCR Permits

  • Boston Class B airspace. Logan International Airport is the primary airport of the Boston Class B airspace, which begins at the surface within 8 miles of the Boston VORTAC. Inside the Boston Class B and other Massachusetts controlled airspace, pilots need FAA authorization before flying, usually requested through LAANC or FAA DroneZone.
  • Class D airports. Massachusetts has no Class C airports, but Class D airspace surrounds Hanscom Field in Bedford, Norwood Memorial, Beverly, Lawrence Municipal, Worcester Regional, Westover in Chicopee, Barnes Municipal in Westfield, New Bedford, Martha’s Vineyard, Nantucket Memorial and Cape Cod Coast Guard Air Station. The Class D airspace at Cape Cod Gateway Airport in Hyannis is active on dates and times published in advance by NOTAM.
  • Temporary flight restrictions. The FAA issues temporary flight restrictions for natural disasters, certain major sporting events and emergency or security situations, and they apply to drones. Check NOTAMs or a LAANC app before every flight.
  • DCR parks, beaches and reservations. Under 302 CMR 12.04(28), a special use permit from the Department of Conservation and Recreation is required to bring, take off or land any aircraft or other apparatus on DCR property, except in an emergency, and to conduct any commercial activity there. Applications are due at least 45 days before the activity.
  • MassDOT and MBTA projects. Vendors flying drones on behalf of MassDOT or the MBTA must hold a current contract and be admitted to the MassDOT Aeronautics Vendor Program, which reviews operating procedures, pilot experience and training.
  • National Park Service units. Massachusetts NPS units include Cape Cod National Seashore, Boston Harbor Islands National and State Park, Minute Man and Lowell national historical parks, New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park, Salem Maritime National Historic Site and Springfield Armory National Historic Site. On NPS-administered lands and waters, NPS policy prohibits launching or landing drones without a specific park approval.

This summary of Massachusetts and federal drone rules is training material, not legal advice. Before every Massachusetts flight, confirm FAA guidance, state and local rules and any TFRs, and secure permission from the property owner.

How Training at Your Massachusetts Location Works

  1. Describe the project. Use the request form or call us with your town, the number of trainees, their experience and your target dates.
  2. We prepare the course. We match a course and instructor to your goals and review the airspace at your site, including any FAA authorization or property permit needed for flight practice.
  3. Learn on familiar ground. Your instructor teaches at your facility and supervises hands-on flights where your pilots will actually work.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Commercial operations in Massachusetts are governed by the FAA Small UAS Rule (Part 107), so you need a Remote Pilot Certificate earned through the aeronautical knowledge test, and your drone must be registered with the FAA. The FAA explains the process in its guide for new remote pilots, and our Massachusetts courses prepare you for the exam.

On DCR property, yes. 302 CMR 12.04(28) requires a DCR special use permit to take off or land an aircraft or other apparatus there, except in an emergency, and to conduct commercial activity. Apply at least 45 days ahead.

Often, with planning. Much of Greater Boston lies within the Boston Class B airspace, and Hanscom Field, Norwood and Beverly each have Class D airspace nearby. You need FAA authorization before flying in controlled airspace, and approved altitudes near Logan can be very low or unavailable.

Not without approval. National Park Service policy prohibits launching, landing or operating drones on the lands and waters it administers, including Cape Cod National Seashore, except in limited, approved cases.

At your Massachusetts site. We teach at offices, campuses, job sites, farms, waterfront and public safety facilities. If you lack open space or are close to Logan or a towered airport, we will help you choose a practice area nearby.

Send our course request form or call 1.818.255.0406 with your Massachusetts location, group size and dates, and we will come back with an instructor and a draft agenda and schedule.
