South Carolina Drone Courses for Plants, Ports, Farms and Storm Crews

South Carolina runs from the Blue Ridge foothills of the Upstate to the marshes and beaches of the Lowcountry, and drone work changes along the way. Crews in Charleston, Columbia, Greenville and Myrtle Beach plan around Class C airspace, while timber, farm and utility teams cover the Midlands and the Pee Dee. Sea breezes, summer thunderstorms and the hurricane season all shape flight planning.

South Carolina crews train with us on their own ground: an automotive campus in the Upstate, a laydown yard near the Port of Charleston, a timber tract in the Pee Dee or a resort property on the Grand Strand. Lessons track the Part 107 knowledge test and focus on what matters here, including Class C airspace at five airports, military fields such as Shaw and Beaufort, sea breeze thunderstorms and hurricane-season planning, aircraft loading and teamwork between pilot and observer. Supervised flights at your site follow.

We work with aerospace and automotive suppliers, builders and developers, farm and forestry operations, electric cooperatives and telecom firms, insurance adjusters and restoration contractors and county sheriffs and fire departments. Newcomers can prepare for the Remote Pilot Certificate, and certificated pilots often add roof inspection, mapping or thermal skills. Class time includes South Carolina’s correctional facility restrictions and the new state drone law that takes effect January 1, 2027.

Why South Carolina Teams Train with Drone Universities

Teaching since 2014

Since 2014 we have focused on instructor-led drone education, and South Carolina students get that background in a course delivered at their own site.

On-site anywhere in South Carolina

From Greenville and Rock Hill to Florence and Beaufort, your instructor travels to you, so lessons fit your real airspace and obstacles.

FAA Certified Flight Instructors in charge

Each course is taught by FAA Certified Flight Instructors who know how to brief Charleston, Columbia and Greenville-Spartanburg airspace for drone crews.

Built on your South Carolina missions

Exercises reflect your work, for example plant roof surveys, post-hurricane damage documentation, pine stand checks or tower inspections.

Easy course scheduling

Call 1.818.255.0406 or request training online and we will confirm dates, crew size and a flying area at or near your South Carolina site.

South Carolina Industries Using Drones Today

  • Manufacturing. Automotive and aerospace plants and their suppliers use drones to inspect roofs, stacks and large building envelopes, and to document facility layouts without lifts or scaffolding.
  • Construction and real estate. Contractors and developers track progress, measure stockpiles and produce orthomosaic maps for coastal and Upstate projects.
  • Agriculture and forestry. Farms and timber companies use aerial imagery to scout crops, assess stands and review drainage. Drone spraying in South Carolina requires commercial applicator certification from Clemson’s Department of Pesticide Regulation in the Core and Category 11 Aerial areas, proof of financial responsibility and an FAA Part 137 certificate.
  • Utilities and telecom. Electric utilities, cooperatives and telecom providers inspect lines, substations and towers.
  • Insurance and storm response. Adjusters and restoration contractors document roof damage after hurricanes and severe storms without climbing onto unsafe structures.
  • Public safety. South Carolina police, sheriffs, fire departments and emergency managers use drones for scene documentation, search over marsh and woodland and hurricane and flood assessment. Read about our police drone training programs for agency options.

Flight drills can focus on any of these South Carolina sectors. Companies preparing several pilots at once can use corporate drone training to combine knowledge-test study with exercises on company property.

South Carolina Drone Laws, Airspace and Park Policies

  • Class C airspace. Charleston International, Columbia Metropolitan, Greenville-Spartanburg International, Myrtle Beach International and Shaw Air Force Base each have Class C airspace. To operate in the controlled airspace around these five airports, a South Carolina pilot needs FAA authorization, usually obtained through LAANC or FAA DroneZone.
  • Class D airports. Class D airspace surrounds Greenville Downtown, Donaldson Field, Florence Regional, Grand Strand, Hilton Head, Beaufort MCAS and McEntire Joint National Guard Base. Some South Carolina towers are part-time, and the Chart Supplement shows when each Class D area is active.
  • Correctional facilities (through 2026). Under current S.C. Code 24-1-300, drones may not fly within 500 feet horizontally or 250 feet vertically of a Department of Corrections facility without the written consent of the Director.
  • New state drone law (from January 1, 2027). Act 150 of 2026 replaces that rule. It requires compliance with FAA rules, makes flying in FAA-controlled airspace without required authorization unlawful under state law, and bars flights directly above or within 1,500 feet horizontally of a correctional or detention facility or a military installation without written consent. Local governments may also limit takeoff and landing sites and flights over public property.
  • State parks. South Carolina State Parks asks drone operators to contact the park directly before bringing a drone, so check with each park well ahead of any flight.
  • National Park Service units. South Carolina NPS sites include Congaree National Park, Fort Sumter and Fort Moultrie National Historical Park, Cowpens National Battlefield, Kings Mountain National Military Park, Ninety Six National Historic Site, Charles Pinckney National Historic Site and Reconstruction Era National Historical Park. NPS policy on drones prohibits launching or landing in them without a specific park approval.

We provide this summary of South Carolina and federal drone rules for training only; it is not legal advice. Before each flight, check NOTAMs and TFRs, FAA guidance and South Carolina law, including the 2027 changes, and get permission from the property owner.

How We Set Up South Carolina Drone Courses

  1. Request a course. Send your South Carolina location, number of pilots, their experience and your preferred dates.
  2. Settle the plan. We confirm curriculum and instructor and review nearby airspace, such as the Charleston or Columbia Class C areas, before the course starts.
  3. Train at your site. Classroom sessions and supervised flights take place at your South Carolina property in the heat, wind and obstacles your crew works with.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Business flights in South Carolina fall under 14 CFR Part 107, so the remote pilot in command must hold an FAA Remote Pilot Certificate after passing the aeronautical knowledge test, and drones over 0.55 pounds need FAA registration. The FAA covers the steps in its remote pilot guide, and our South Carolina courses prepare you for the test.

Current state law limits drone flights near Department of Corrections facilities. A new state drone law takes effect January 1, 2027, adding limits around correctional and detention facilities and military installations and making it unlawful under state law to fly in controlled airspace without FAA authorization. The FAA still regulates the airspace.

Yes, with FAA authorization. Charleston International and Columbia Metropolitan are both surrounded by Class C airspace, and Joint Base Charleston and McEntire Joint National Guard Base are military installations. Facility map altitudes shrink close to those runways, so we teach students to read the maps and request authorization.

Check with each South Carolina state park before your visit, since every park handles drone requests on its own. At Congaree National Park, NPS policy prohibits launching, landing or operating drones except in limited, approved cases.

At your property or a site you pick. We have taught at plants, farms, campuses and public safety training grounds around South Carolina. If your site is cramped or close to a towered airport or military field, we will help you find a better practice area nearby.

Send the course location request or call 1.818.255.0406 with your South Carolina location, group size and preferred dates. We then confirm the course, instructor and schedule with you.
