Drone Training Shaped Around Ohio Operations
Ohio has a long connection to flight, from the Wright brothers’ work in Dayton to the aerospace research that continues in the state today. For drone pilots, the workload is just as varied: factory and warehouse roofs around Columbus and Toledo, bridge and highway projects on a dense road network, grain and livestock farms in the west, and port and shoreline work along Lake Erie.
Each setting brings different questions. A flight near downtown Cleveland means working with Class B airspace, an inspection at an industrial plant needs close coordination with site safety staff, and a farm flight may involve long distances and low-flying agricultural aircraft. Our instructors address those questions directly, using your own sites as examples wherever possible.
Drone Universities teaches the FAA Part 107 knowledge areas together with the procedures that follow from them: checklists, airspace authorizations, crew roles and emergency planning. Training takes place on site, one-on-one or in groups.

How Ohio Industries Use Drones
- Manufacturing and industrial plants. Plants and processing facilities use drones for roof, stack and exterior inspection, and to document sites before and during expansion projects.
- Logistics and distribution. Distribution centers around Columbus and along the state’s interstate corridors use aerial imagery for roof surveys, yard planning and facility records.
- Agriculture. Corn, soybean and livestock operations use drones for field scouting, drainage mapping and storm damage review. Spray drones involve additional FAA requirements beyond Part 107.
- Transportation and infrastructure. Engineering firms and public agencies document bridges, highway work and construction progress. The Ohio Department of Transportation runs a UAS Center in Springfield that supports state and local agencies.
- Public safety. Police and fire departments use drones to get an overhead view of incidents, support searches and assess damage after severe storms.
- Energy and utilities. Utility and renewable energy crews inspect lines, substations and solar sites without sending workers to height.
We weight each course toward the work your team does, so the maneuvers and planning you practice carry straight into daily operations.
Ohio Drone Laws and Airspace Notes
- Cleveland and Cincinnati Class B airspace. Cleveland Hopkins International Airport is the primary airport of the Cleveland Class B airspace. The Cincinnati-area Class B airspace is centered on Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport in Covington, Kentucky, and extends over parts of southwest Ohio. Part 107 flights in controlled airspace require FAA authorization, usually requested through LAANC or FAA DroneZone.
- Class C and Class D airports. Class C airspace surrounds John Glenn Columbus International, Dayton International, Akron-Canton and Toledo Express. Airports with Class D airspace include Rickenbacker International, Ohio State University Airport, Lunken Field in Cincinnati, Burke Lakefront and Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.
- Ohio drone law. Since April 9, 2025, Ohio Revised Code Section 4561.51 requires drone flights over Ohio to comply with federal law and FAA regulations, and makes it an offense to fly in a way that disrupts on-duty police, fire or emergency medical personnel. It also prohibits using a drone to photograph, record or loiter over or near a critical facility, such as a prison, court, military installation or hospital that receives air ambulance services, for the purpose of committing certain crimes.
- Local rules. Under Section 4561.52, municipalities, townships, counties and park districts may set rules for the drones they own and for recreational drone flights in their parks and on other public property they own.
- State parks. Ohio Administrative Code rule 1501:46-13-11 prohibits operating a drone within a state park without permission from the Division chief or an authorized agent, except at landing zones maintained for that purpose. Photographing or filming park lands and facilities with a drone also requires permission.
- Cuyahoga Valley National Park. This park between Cleveland and Akron is administered by the National Park Service. NPS policy prohibits launching, landing or operating drones on its lands and waters except in limited, approved cases.
This is general guidance, not legal advice. Laws and airspace change, so confirm current FAA, state and local requirements and the landowner’s permission before each flight.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a Part 107 certificate required for commercial drone work in Ohio?
Yes. Flying a drone for business in Ohio requires an FAA Remote Pilot Certificate under Part 107 and a registered drone. Ohio law also requires that drone flights comply with federal law and FAA regulations. See the FAA’s guide to becoming a certificated remote pilot.
Can I fly near downtown Cleveland?
Yes, with planning. Areas near Cleveland Hopkins and Burke Lakefront airports lie in controlled airspace, so you need FAA authorization before flying there, and approved altitudes can be very low. We show you how to check FAA facility maps and request authorization.
Can I fly a drone in an Ohio state park?
Only with permission from the Division of Parks and Watercraft chief or an authorized agent, or at a landing zone maintained for drones. Filming park lands with a drone also requires permission. Contact the park before planning a flight.
Do you train public safety agencies in Ohio?
Yes. We offer public safety and law enforcement courses alongside Part 107 preparation, with exercises built around scene documentation, search support and safe operation near emergency responders.
Where does training take place?
At your location anywhere in Ohio, including offices, plants, farms, campuses and training grounds. We review site requirements with you when you request training.
