Practical Drone Instruction Throughout New Jersey
New Jersey fits a great deal of airspace and activity into a compact state. Much of northeastern New Jersey lies beneath the New York Class B airspace, with Newark Liberty International as one of its primary airports, and parts of South Jersey near the Delaware River sit under the Philadelphia Class B airspace. Between them are busy general aviation and military airfields, dense suburbs, ports, corporate campuses, farmland and a long Atlantic shoreline.
Drone Universities delivers drone training in New Jersey at your own site, so pilots learn in the environment they will fly in. Instructors teach the material covered on the FAA Part 107 Knowledge Test, including airspace, weather, regulations, radio communication and decision-making, and connect it to supervised flying, checklists and authorization planning for your location.
We work with solo operators, small businesses, municipalities, utilities, universities and corporate teams, one-on-one or in groups. Training can focus on earning a Remote Pilot Certificate or on applied skills such as inspection, mapping and aerial imaging.
Why New Jersey Organizations Book Drone Universities
Teaching in person since 2014
Since 2014 Drone Universities has trained remote pilots face to face, with a curriculum built on FAA regulations and the conditions New Jersey crews actually fly in.
On-site instruction
Our instructors travel to your location in New Jersey, which keeps staff close to their work and lets every lesson reflect your actual site.
FAA Certified Flight Instructors for New Jersey crews
FAA Certified Flight Instructors teach New Jersey students to work the New York and Philadelphia Class B airspace with a pilot’s approach to charts, weather, radio procedures and risk management.
Lessons tied to your work
Scenarios can follow your tasks, from warehouse roof surveys and bridge documentation to shoreline imaging and incident response.

Drone Use in New Jersey Logistics, Construction and Coastal Work
- Logistics and warehousing. Distribution centers along the Turnpike and Interstate 78 corridors use drones for roof inspection, yard planning and building documentation.
- Construction and transportation. Contractors and engineering firms record progress, measure earthwork and capture close-up imagery of bridges, rail structures and roadway projects.
- Utilities and energy. Electric and gas utilities, solar installers and telecom companies inspect lines, substations, rooftop arrays and towers with less time spent at height.
- Coastal and environmental work. Engineers, municipalities and environmental consultants document beaches, dunes, wetlands and storm damage along the ocean and back bays.
- Agriculture. South Jersey farms, from vegetable and nursery operations to cranberry and blueberry growers, use aerial imagery for scouting and water management. Spraying by drone requires NJDEP Category 11 aerial applicator certification, which includes 40 hours of on-the-job training with at least 10 aerial applications, plus an FAA Part 137 certificate.
- Public safety. New Jersey police, fire departments and county emergency managers use drones for scene documentation, search support and assessment after coastal storms. Agencies can review our police drone training programs for mission-specific courses.
We can build flight exercises around the New Jersey work your team does. Companies certifying several pilots at once can look at our corporate drone training options.
New Jersey Drone Laws, Class B Airspace and Park Rules
- Two Class B airspace areas. Newark Liberty International Airport is one of the primary airports of the New York Class B airspace, which covers much of northeastern New Jersey, and parts of South Jersey near the Delaware River lie beneath the Philadelphia Class B airspace. Under both Class B areas and in other New Jersey controlled airspace, pilots need FAA authorization before flying, usually requested through LAANC or FAA DroneZone.
- Atlantic City, Teterboro and other towered fields. Atlantic City International Airport is surrounded by Class C airspace. Class D airspace surrounds Teterboro, Essex County Airport in Caldwell, Morristown Municipal and Trenton-Mercer, as well as McGuire Field and Lakehurst Maxfield Field at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst.
- State drone law. N.J.S.A. 2C:40-28 makes it an offense to operate a drone in a way that endangers the life or property of another, interferes with first responders, endangers or gathers information about a correctional facility without permission, takes or helps take wildlife, or violates a restraining order, and to fly while intoxicated. N.J.S.A. 23:7A-2 also bars using a drone to hinder lawful hunting.
- Local ordinances. N.J.S.A. 2C:40-29 states that the law preempts county and municipal rules on private drone use that are inconsistent with it, and N.J.S.A. 2C:40-27 allows anyone authorized under federal law to fly in the state for any purpose, consistent with federal rules.
- State parks and forests. New Jersey State Park Service policy prohibits drone operation on all lands and waters it administers unless specifically approved. Limited approvals are arranged in advance through a Special Use Permit.
- National Park Service units. Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, the Sandy Hook Unit of Gateway National Recreation Area, Morristown National Historical Park, Paterson Great Falls National Historical Park and Thomas Edison National Historical Park in West Orange are NPS-administered. NPS policy bars launching or landing drones there without a specific park approval.
We offer this summary of New Jersey and federal drone rules for training, not as legal advice. Before each New Jersey flight, confirm FAA guidance, state and local law and any TFRs, and get the property owner’s permission.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does flying a drone for a New Jersey business require an FAA certificate?
Yes. Commercial drone operations in New Jersey are covered by the FAA Small UAS Rule (Part 107), so you need a Remote Pilot Certificate earned by passing the aeronautical knowledge test, and your drone must be registered with the FAA. The FAA lays out the steps in Becoming a Certificated Remote Pilot, and our New Jersey courses prepare you for the exam.
Does New Jersey have its own drone law?
Yes. N.J.S.A. 2C:40-27 through 2C:40-30 define drone offenses and preempt inconsistent county and municipal rules on private drone use, while the FAA continues to regulate New Jersey airspace.
Can I fly near Newark or Teterboro?
Only with FAA authorization inside their controlled airspace. Much of northeastern New Jersey lies under the New York Class B airspace, and Teterboro has its own Class D area. Facility map altitudes near these airports can be very low or zero, so we teach students to read the maps and request authorization.
Are drones allowed in New Jersey state parks and forests?
Not without advance approval. New Jersey State Park Service policy prohibits drone operation on the lands and waters it administers unless approved beforehand through the park office and a Special Use Permit.
Where in New Jersey can training be held?
At your New Jersey location. We teach at offices, warehouses, job sites, farms, campuses and public safety facilities. If your site lacks open space or sits under tight airspace, we will help you choose a practice area nearby.
How can I schedule drone training in New Jersey?
Fill out a training request or call 1.818.255.0406 with your New Jersey location, group size and dates. We follow up with an instructor, an agenda and dates for your approval.
