On-Site Drone Courses for Wisconsin Mills, Dairies and Utilities
Wisconsin runs from the Lake Michigan shoreline to the Mississippi River bluffs, and drone work changes along the way. Crews in Milwaukee and Madison plan around Class C airspace, dairy and crop teams scout fields across the farm country, and utility and forestry crews work the woods and lakes of the Northwoods. Lake breezes, summer storms and long, cold winters that sap battery performance all shape flight planning.
Wisconsin pilots learn best where they will fly, so we set up at your paper mill, dairy, substation yard or county highway shop. Instruction follows the Part 107 knowledge exam and gives extra attention to the Milwaukee and Madison Class C areas, lake-effect and winter flying, battery care in the cold, aircraft loading and crew communication. The day continues outdoors with supervised flights on your own site.
Our Wisconsin students include paper and machinery manufacturers in the Fox Valley, dairy and cranberry growers, utilities and cooperatives, construction and survey firms, forestry crews and sheriffs’ offices. Some arrive with no certificate and work toward the Remote Pilot exam, while licensed pilots tend to add mapping, structure inspection or thermal imaging. We also go through Wisconsin limits near critical facilities, prisons and schools.
What Sets Our Wisconsin Drone Training Apart
In the classroom since 2014
Drone Universities has trained remote pilots since 2014, and Wisconsin crews benefit from lessons honed through many seasons of field instruction.

Drone Applications in Wisconsin Industries
- Manufacturing and paper. Plants, paper mills and suppliers use drones to inspect roofs, stacks and large building envelopes, and to document facility layouts without lifts or scaffolding.
- Agriculture and dairy. Dairy, corn, soybean and cranberry operations use aerial imagery to scout fields and review drainage and barn roofs. For spray drones, Wisconsin DATCP requires commercial applicator certification in the aerial category (9.9) plus a base category, an individual commercial applicator license and a pesticide business license, in addition to the FAA Part 137 certificate.
- Utilities and energy. Electric utilities, cooperatives and telecom providers inspect lines, substations and towers across long, wooded rural corridors.
- Construction and engineering. Wisconsin builders and engineering firms document road and site work through the short construction season, compute stockpile volumes for gravel and sand and produce orthomosaic maps for planning.
- Forestry and environment. Forestry, shoreline and environmental teams use drones to assess timber stands, storm damage and erosion along lakes and rivers.
- Public safety. Wisconsin police, sheriffs, fire departments and emergency management offices fly drones to map crash scenes, search woods and lakeshores and document storm and flood damage. Agencies can find details in our public safety drone programs.
Flight drills can be adapted to any of these Wisconsin sectors. For teams training several pilots together, our corporate drone training pairs exam preparation with practical exercises at your location.
Drone Rules in Wisconsin: Airspace, Statutes and DNR Property
- Class C airspace. General Mitchell International in Milwaukee, Dane County Regional in Madison and Green Bay Austin Straubel each have Class C airspace. Flying in the controlled airspace of these Wisconsin airports requires FAA authorization, which most pilots request through LAANC and, when that does not apply, through FAA DroneZone.
- Class D airports. Class D airspace surrounds Timmerman, Waukesha County, Kenosha Regional, Southern Wisconsin Regional, Appleton International, Wittman Regional, Central Wisconsin, Chippewa Valley Regional, La Crosse Regional, Volk Field and Sparta/Fort McCoy. Some of these Wisconsin towers do not operate overnight, so confirm the hours each Class D area is in effect in the Chart Supplement.
- Critical facilities, prisons and schools. Under Wis. Stat. 114.045, drones may not fly below 300 feet over, or within 500 feet of, listed facilities such as power plants, substations, water facilities and refineries, though commercial flights in compliance with FAA rules are excepted. The same section bars flying over a correctional institution without authorization and over school property while school is open, unless the school board authorizes it.
- Privacy. Wis. Stat. 942.10 makes it a crime to use a drone with intent to photograph, record or observe a person in a place where they have a reasonable expectation of privacy.
- State parks and properties. According to the Wisconsin DNR, drones are restricted to areas posted for their use at state parks, state recreation areas, state natural areas, the Kettle Moraine and Point Beach state forests and the Lower Wisconsin State Riverway, under NR 45.04.
- National Park Service areas. Apostle Islands National Lakeshore and the Saint Croix National Scenic Riverway are NPS units, and the Ice Age and North Country national scenic trails also cross Wisconsin. National Park Service rules bar launching or landing drones on NPS-administered lands and waters without a specific approval.
We summarize Wisconsin and federal drone rules here as teaching material, not legal advice. Before each flight, check NOTAMs and TFRs, FAA guidance, Wisconsin statutes and local ordinances, and make sure you have permission from the owner of the launch site.
Three Steps to a Wisconsin Drone Course
- Tell us about the crew. Send the Wisconsin location, the number of pilots, their current experience and preferred dates.
- Review the course plan. We confirm the curriculum and instructor and check your site against nearby airspace, such as Mitchell or Dane County Class C, beforehand.
- Fly where you work. Lessons and supervised flights take place at your Wisconsin facility in the conditions your pilots really encounter.

Frequently Asked Questions
Must Wisconsin pilots be FAA certificated to fly drones for business?
Yes. Under 14 CFR Part 107, anyone acting as remote pilot in command on a commercial flight in Wisconsin needs an FAA Remote Pilot Certificate, earned by passing the aeronautical knowledge test, and drones over 0.55 pounds must be registered. Read the FAA guide for new remote pilots for details. Our Wisconsin courses prepare students for this test.
What does Wisconsin law say about drones?
Wisconsin restricts drone flights near critical facilities, over correctional institutions and over schools during school hours, and makes drone surveillance of people in places where they expect privacy a crime. Commercial flights that follow FAA rules are exempt from the critical facility restriction. The FAA still regulates the airspace.
Can I fly near Milwaukee or Madison?
Yes, after you receive FAA authorization. General Mitchell International in Milwaukee and Dane County Regional in Madison are surrounded by Class C airspace, while Timmerman and Waukesha County have Class D areas. Facility map altitudes get lower close to these runways, so we teach students to interpret the maps and request LAANC authorization.
Can I fly in Wisconsin state parks?
Only in areas the DNR has posted for drone use. Wisconsin DNR rules limit drones at state parks, recreation areas, natural areas and several state forests to those posted spots, so contact the property office before your visit.
Where in Wisconsin will we train?
At your property or another location you select. We have taught at mills, dairy farms, utility yards and county training centers in Wisconsin. If your space is tight or close to a towered airport, we will help you find a better practice area nearby.
How do I request drone training for a Wisconsin team?
Fill out the training location request or call 1.818.255.0406 with your Wisconsin site, number of pilots and preferred dates. We will confirm the course, instructor and timing with you.
